GOP candidate Hunter pledges to build border fence in six months if elected

National defense and border security are two issues in which Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-California) has an extensive resume. He is on the campaign trail hoping to break out of the "second tier" of GOP presidential hopefuls.

Hunter's congressional district is in San Diego, California, on the front line of the battle over illegal immigration. He was able to get a security fence built in that area, which he says has cut down the "smuggling of people and drugs" by more than 90 percent in that sector.

The California lawmaker is now campaigning for president, pledging that he will move forward with the construction of an 800-plus-mile stretch of fence authorized in a 2006 bill he sponsored. "I wrote the law that takes it across Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas," he explains. "We have to get that fence built, and as president I've committed that I will build that fence -- all 854 miles -- in six months."

Duncan Hunter has been strong on immigration. He has not wavered his position or shifted to the right come election time. He has been consistent.
